Post Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) Residency in Managed Care

Accreditation: American Society of Health-System Pharmacists in partnership with the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy.


Envolve Pharmacy Solutions’ PGY-1 Managed Care Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to develop pharmacist clinicians with diverse patient care, leadership and education skills who are eligible for board certification and postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. Our managed care pharmacy residency will provide systematic training of pharmacists to achieve professional competence in the delivery of patient care and managed care pharmacy practice.

Successful completion of this program will prepare residents for clinical pharmacist positions in the following areas:  prior authorizations, formulary development and management, quality initiatives, drug utilization review, medication therapy management, and specialty pharmacy operations.

Learning Opportunites

During your residency, we will establish goals and objectives to match your interests and complement your previous experience. In addition to completing a yearlong research project, you will also have opportunities to:

  • Present at a professional pharmacy conference, Western States Conference.
  • Present at corporate pharmacy meetings
  • Apply to participate in a resident teaching certificate program (as available through a partnered university)
  • Develop and present an ACPE-accredited CE course


  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy, or have a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Committee (FPGEC) certificate from the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP)
  • California pharmacist license (or eligible for licensure in California)
  • Able to commit to a one-year residency
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and will not require sponsorship now, or in the future

Application Process

Applicants will complete the following:

  • Online employment application 
  • American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Resident Matching Program Registration
  • Submission to the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS):
    • Letter of intent explaining your motivation to pursue the residency
    • Current curriculum vitae
    • Three letters of recommendation, preferably from a pharmacy school professor, work or internship advisor, and an Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) preceptor
    • School of pharmacy official transcript

Interview Required

  • Applications are due on January 7
  • Applicants will record video responses to screening questions when completing the Envolve Pharmacy Solutions online application
  • Selected applicants will be invited to an interview by the end of January
  • Rotations start the first Monday in July

Yes, in six-week experiential rotations we host APPE managed care students from multiple colleges of pharmacy

Some of our previous residents are employed at our company and various other companies, including CVS/Caremark, Blue Shield of California, LA Care Health Plan, McKesson, Santa Clara Health Plan, and SCAN Health Plan.

Our company offers only one PGY-1 Managed Care Pharmacy Resident position.

All of our applications are reviewed by a group composed of the residency director, the current resident and preceptors. They review each applicant’s letter of intent, CV, letters of recommendation, extracurricular activities, grades, and managed care experience. The group identifies candidates to invite for an onsite interview. Given the number of applications we receive, we are unable to interview all applicants. During the interview we try to get to know the applicant as well as assess his/her communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving skills, goals, and whether he/she is a good fit for our program.

We give our residents feedback and evaluation frequently through weekly one-on-one meetings with the residency director as well as scheduled and ad hoc one-on-one meetings with the preceptors.


The residency director develops a list of ideas for the resident’s research project to meet a business need. The resident may propose an idea of his/her own that meets a business need. The resident completes the project independently with coaching from the residency director.

Each resident will be required to staff one week of the “Night Pharmacist Rotation” on a revolving schedule, for a total of five cumulative weeks over the course of the residency program.  The schedule for each week is as follows: Monday – Friday 12:00pm to 9:00pm; Saturday and Sunday 8:00am to 4:30pm.
